Proposed conference realignment for 2009-20013

On Thursday, the N.C. High School Athletic Association revealed the first draft of conferences for the next statewide realignment, which will begin in 2009.
The draft calls for Hunter Huss and South Point to join a wacky nine-team class 3A conference that stretches across four counties. The Huskies and Red Raiders would join Charlotte Catholic, Harding and Waddell from Mecklenburg County, Marvin Ridge, Parkwood and Weddington from Union County, and Anson County High.
Meanwhile, Ashbrook, Forestview and North Gaston would join Burns, Crest, Kings Mountain and R-S Central in a seven-team 3A league.
East Gaston, the lone Gaston County school remaining in class 4A for the next realignment, would join Charlotte schools South Mecklenburg, Olympic, Garinger, Myers Park and West Mecklenburg in a six-team 4A league.
Gaston County’s smallest schools would stay together under the current draft, as Bessemer City, Cherryville and Highland Tech would join all four Lincoln County schools, plus Chase, East Rutherford and Shelby in a monster 10-team 1A/2A combination conference.
The draft released Thursday was just that — a draft that could be (and likely will be) changed several times.
Local schools are required to react to the draft by attending the West meeting Jan. 24 at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.
After that, the realignment committee will review proposals from various schools and draw up a second draft by February. The committee will finalize conferences in March, subject to final appeals.
